Peanut butter and banana form the base of this shake, with your chosen milk to adjust the consistency. Protein powder is optional; the recipe works as a banana and peanut butter drink without it.
Makes: about 1 large glass. Equipment: a blender, measuring utensils and a clean glass.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe banana, peeled
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter
- 240 ml milk or a plant-based drink suitable for your diet
- Vanilla or unflavoured protein powder, optional — use the amount and preparation directions on its own pack
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey, optional
- A few ice cubes, optional, if your blender can crush ice
- Ready-made sea moss gel — use the amount directed on your current jar for the person drinking it
Method
- Prepare the ingredients. Use clean hands, utensils and a clean blender jug. Peel the banana and check the ingredient labels, especially the peanut butter, milk, powder and gel.
- Add the shake base. Put the banana, peanut butter and milk in the blender. If using protein powder, follow its own amount and preparation instructions.
- Add gel and optional flavours. Measure gel using your current jar’s directions, including any daily limit, then return the jar to the fridge. Add cinnamon, sweetener and ice if wanted and suitable for the blender.
- Blend and adjust. Blend according to your appliance’s instructions until combined. Add a little extra milk or plant-based drink if you want a thinner shake.
- Pour and drink. Pour into a glass and serve immediately. If the quantity fills more than one glass, that does not mean an extra gel serving for the same person.
Do you need protein powder?
No. Leave it out if you prefer and adjust the milk for the texture you like. Powder scoops and serving directions vary, so there is no universal scoop amount in this recipe. The finished drink’s protein content depends on your ingredients and quantities; sea moss gel is not a substitute for protein powder.
Peanuts and other allergens
This recipe contains peanut butter. Milk, plant-based drinks and powders can introduce other allergens. Check every current pack and use suitable equipment and preparation practices for the person drinking it. Swapping one ingredient does not automatically make the whole drink suitable for an allergy.
Can you make it vegan?
Choose an appropriate plant-based drink and, if using it, vegan protein powder. Use maple syrup instead of honey and check the exact gel’s dietary information.
Will you taste the gel?
The result depends on the gel blend and your own preferences. Peanut butter and banana contribute their own flavour; different gel blends will change the finished shake.
Choosing and using your gel
Use ready-made gel that is within its date and has been stored as directed. Golden Gel contains golden sea moss, spring water and lime; other blends have different ingredients. Check your current jar and our Ingredients & Suitability guidance before choosing.
Follow the serving instructions for your own gel, including any daily limit and other gel you have already used that day. Powder, dried moss, capsules and gummies are not direct substitutes for the gel amount in these instructions. Our format guide explains the differences. If a direction is unclear, ask us before using it.
Make it when you are ready to drink it
Serve this drink immediately. Keep the gel jar refrigerated between uses and follow its own date and storage directions. Mixing gel into a drink does not restart its shelf life, and the jar date does not establish a storage period for the finished drink. See our Storage & Freshness guidance for jar care. Do not use a suspect jar or taste it to check freshness.
Before using sea moss
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, choosing for a child, taking medication or managing a health condition, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use. Sea moss contains naturally occurring iodine; if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, speak to your doctor before use.
